10 TREES CHOPPED OFF IN MALABAR HILL AREA!!

The thoroughly wanton chopping of 10 trees near Anju Building in the Malabar Hill area in Mulund (W) has triggered off a vociferous protest from the tree lovers here and the situation has become somewhat hot to handle. Recently, the residents of Anju Bldg. had petitioned the BMC T-Ward to trim the trees whose branches were hanging precariously. However, at that time, along with the trimming work, 10 healthy trees were hacked from their bases. This had angered the tree lovers and a resident, Rakesh Singh, had written to T-Ward in this regard, demanding strict action against the guilty. Singh has disclosed to Home Times, ” The trees were in a healthy state and should not have been hacked. I had personally watered these trees for a number of years. It saddens me to see them destroyed.” On the one hand, the government is on a tree plantation drive with ‘Save the trees’ as the clarion call and on the other the hand wanton cutting of trees raises serious doubts in the minds of the people. The Buildings Dept. Secretary, Sukhbir Kaur, apologising for this tragedy, said, ” Permission was accorded for only trimming the trees. However, some healthy trees have been chopped off. This was done in my absence. Regrettably, nothing can be done now. It has come our notice that untrained persons were employed to do this job. BMC T-Ward has taken serious of this lapse and assured strict action against the guilty.
