3 students of Mulund(E), Shraddha Datrak, Shambhavi Kulkarni and Monica Gurav were returning from their classes on Thursday around 9 p.m. when a big branch of a Peepal tree situated at Centre Point, Hanuman Chowk came crashing down on them, injuring all the friends.

They were preparing for their NEET exams. All of them were first taken to a government hospital and later shifted to a private hospital, where Monica was discharged after treatment. However, Shraddha, because of severe head injuries, is still in an unconscious state. Shambhavi has been admitted to Spandan hospital where doctors may have to insert a metallic rod in her fractured leg.

This accident has been registered at Navghar police station where a panchnama has been filed. Mulundkars are blaming the Tree Department of BMC T-Ward for this mishap. On the one hand, tree branches are being wantonly chopped to accommodate hoardings, whereas the same department expresses helplessness to cut branches where absolutely necessary.

The parents of the students have informed Home Times that this incident has left everyone shaken to the core. The unfortunate victims were to appear for their NEET exams on May 6th, but how would they appear now? they lamented. “How are we to be blamed for BMC’s neglect? ” they asked. They are approaching various political parties for financial assistance, but no aid seems to be forthcoming.
