Be a Good Samaritan By Action and Deed!

The Government and the Supreme Court take vital decisions for the welfare of the nation and its citizens but, alas, instead of obeying these decisions like a good samaritan, it is tragic that most of the citizens never abide by the rules and regulations imposed by the government. For instance, during this Diwali festival, the Supreme Court had a set a time limit to burst crackers, taking into consideration the increasing air pollution in Delhi and other metropolitan cities of the country. However, despite the Supreme Court orders, neither Delhi nor Mumbai obeyed the orders and fire-crackers were burst beyond the time limit in every nook and corner of the country. People claimed Diwali is synonymous with crackers and Diwali cannot be celebrated without bursting crackers. Hence, the Supreme Court orders were openly violated. Though the police were asked to act tough, regretfully, the police and the administration stood like mute spectators and watched the violation of Supreme Court orders!!

Mumbaikars must be thankful that Mumbai, unlike Delhi, is less polluted. Nevertheless, still Mumbai stands fourth in air pollution in the country. Hence, being educated, Mumbaikars must understand the importance of air pollution and should have obeyed the Supreme Court orders. In fact, not just followed the orders, but should have come forward and stopped others from violating the Supreme Court orders. Remember, to bring a change somebody must come forward and voice about the hazards of the issue at hand. Remember, had Mahatma Gandhi not protested against the British unjust rule, had we won our freedom? Thus, it is high time we realise our duty as citizens and come out from the comfort of our rooms and wage a war against air pollution or else a day will come when, like Delhiites, Mumbaikars too would use a mask to go out for morning walks!!

After air pollution, the other grave issue that is slowly crippling India is the menace of sound pollution. During festivals like Ganesh Utsav and Govinda, the honourable Supreme Court imposed a ban on DJ and high volume loud speakers. But, the citizens gave a deaf ear to the Apex Court’s orders and used DJs and loud speakers, caring little about the infants, sick patients and heart patients. Though the Supreme Court had ordered not to burst crackers outside hospitals and educational institutions, yet the crazy festival buffs were so passionately engrossed in their masti that they did not care about the Supreme Court orders and danced with great abandon way in front of hospitals and schools. The patients in hospitals and students in schools faced great hardship, but in the name of religious festivals, none dared to come forward and lash the wrongdoers! The police and civic administration defended their side saying, “What can we do, nobody complained to us, hence we were helpless.”

History is packed with instances that no Revolution has been a success without the unity of the public. Even the Nirbhaya movement in which a medical student was gang-raped on a moving bus, succeeded in making rape cases fast-tracked due to public unity. Thus, Mulundkars, if you want to get rid of air and sound pollution, then the call of the time is to come together and collectively voice our grievance against this injustice.

Whatever be the issue, if it is for the welfare of the society then it is the duty of every citizen to pursue it sincerely. The government began the Swachh Bharat mission, a drive for clean and healthy India. A ban on plastic and thermocol was imposed to save Mother Earth from environmental pollution. However, despite the government taking such a good initiative, if the citizens do not abide by them all the hard work of the government is drained off. Further, our country can never be free from air, environment and sound pollution.

Home Times thus urges the citizens that just uploading pictures and write-ups on social media will not solve our problem. If we wish to root out the problem from its base, then you have to come on the road and raise your voice! If you watch someone doing wrong, then stop him and teach him to obey the Supreme Courts orders. Be a Good Samaritan by action and deed!
