BHEL PURI VENDOR CRUSHED UNDER BUS; LOCALS DEMAND SPEED-BREAKER!!

Reckless driving took another life in Mulund on Tuesday when a poor bhel puri vendor was brutally crushed to death after he came under the wheels of a speeding TMT bus!! The errant driver has been arrested. Local residents claim, besides reckless driving, the death was due to the absence of a speed-breaker which the residents have been demanding since long. However, the cruel BMC is giving a deaf ear!!!  The locals told Home Times that the road has witnessed many accidents, but despite several complaints both, BMC and RTO have ignored these complaints!!!

After the accident, the residents are quite angry and are up in arms against the civic administration. Dada Jhande, a social activist from the area, told Home Times, “The road has become a nightmare for pedestrians. It has witnessed many accidents in the past. We have written several letters to BMC T-Ward to erect a speed breaker, but in vain.” “Suresh Gupta, the bhel puri vendor who was killed, would be alive today had the BMC erected a speed-breaker,” he moaned.

Threatening to launch a mass movement, Dada said, “After the death of Suresh Gupta we would again submit a grievance letter demanding to erect a speed-breaker at the earliest. If both, BMC and RTO ignore our grievance yet again, then we will be forced to come on the street and organize a mass movement to get our demands fulfilled.”

On Tuesday, April 9, Suresh Gupta (43), a bhel puri vendor, left his house around 4 pm for a stroll before going about his business. However, while crossing the road near Buddha Vihar at Dumping Road, he was rammed by a speeding TMT Bus (MH04EP0729) and crushed to death as his head came under the rear tyre of the bus. An eyewitness, Prabhakar Pagare, who witnessed the horrifying accident, told Home Times, “I was on the spot when the accident occurred. The bus was coming at a very fast speed hence it knocked down Gupta. Unfortunately, when Gupta fell on the road, the rear tyre of the bus went over his head and it was cruelly crushed like a coconut! The scene was scary and appalling.”

Pagare further informed, “Gupta died on the spot and soon the a huge crowd gathered at the site. However, before the public became violent, a Mulund West Police Inspector and a team of constables reached the spot and took the dead body in their custody. The police also arrested the errant driver, Atul Chandrakant Dhakare, and seized the bus.”

Mulund Police informed Home Times, “Due to the head of the deceased being smashed, the face was disfigured but, fortunately, Pagare’s wife Kamla (39) identified the body.” Informing about the reckless driver, the police said, “The driver was inexperienced and had joined just 6 months back.”

With the death of Suresh Gupta, the family of Gupta is in mourning as he was the only earning member in the family. Rajesh Gupta, the brother of the deceased lamented, “My brother was the sole bread-winner in the family. The government is the accused for his death. Penalizing the reckless driver is not going to solve the issue of his family. The government must think of providing compensation for the survival of his family.”

Condemning the reckless drivers, he said, “Everyday, TMT bus drivers and other private vehicle drivers drive at such jet speed that the poor pedestrians become their victims. In addition, the spot where my brother was killed has no CCTV camera to capture the reckless drivers who have created havoc in the city.”

Meanwhile, local residents are up in arms and demanding to make the speed breaker at the earliest.
