BMC AT IT AGAIN!!!

Once again, BMC’s notice to Lok Everest Society to chop down 9 trees has led to strong protests from the Society’s members and environment activists are opposing this action on BMC’s part. BMC is proposing to construct a safety wall at the nullah next to Lok Everest Society. Some months two trees had been felled which had given rise to strong opposition. Once again, a Notice has been served on the Society by BMC to uproot 9 trees on the pretext of constructing the safety wall at the nullah, which is being vehemently opposed by the residents. Last year, a similar proposal was made to cut down 15 trees for the sake of the safety wall. However, only 2 trees were felled in view of the strong protests by the locals when environmental activist Zoru Bhathena and other Society members were also present at the spot. It would be pertinent that a nullah is flowing by the side of this Society which has prompted the construction of this safety wall. This plan has been in the pipeline for quite some time now. It is, however, BMC’s contention that 9 trees will have to be ‘sacrificed’ if a safety wall has to be constructed here for which a Notice has been served on the Society. But, tree lover Samir Patil maintains that it is not at all necessary for BMC to chop the trees for the sake of the safety wall as trees protect the environment. Local Corporator, Prakash Gangadhare has assured that he will take up the matter with the Solid Waste Management officials.

However, this Notice served on Lok Everest Society has stirred up a hornet’s nest and has led to acrimony amongst all concerned.
