BMC T-Ward On The Prowl: Litterbugs In Mulund, BEWARE!!!

In its bid to make Mumbai clean, the BMC has raised a Nuisance Detection Squad to keep a hawk-eye on errant litterbugs who make the city unclean. The Nuisance Detection Squad inspectors, along with BMC Clean-up Marshals have been licensed to fine litterbugs. In July, BMC T-Ward collected a whopping penalty of Rs 1, 14, 000/-. Similarly, Clean-Up Marshals appointed in July have collected Rs 82,000/- in fines.

According to reports, BMC has formed an exclusive Nuisance Detection Squad. This squad has been deployed in all the 24 wards of Mumbai. The Nuisance Detection Squad has a group of 6 to 7 inspectors who patrol public places and fine litterbugs.

A BMC official informed that, till now, BMC has recently formed a team of 15 Clean-Up Marshals who have started their duty. Soon, BMC would be appointing an additional 15 Clean-Up Marshals. Thus, a total of 30 Clean-Up Marshals will be on their toes keeping eyes on people making the city unclean.

The squad keeps a vigil on errant litterbugs and penalise people who are guilty of dumping trash in nullahs and public places around railway stations, tracks and slums. The Nuisance Detection Squad would penalise anybody found throwing garbage on road, urinating in open space, dumping debris, keeping the surrounding unclean, throwing garbage outside garbage bins, spitting at public places, etc. Even the motorists will be fined who make the road dirty with the muck on their tyres. Recently, a motorist in Mulund was fined Rs 10,000/- by the Nuisance Detection Squad for making the road dirty with the muck from his tyres.

The Solid Waste Department of BMC T-Ward told Home Times, “We are trying to create awareness among Mumbaikars to keep the city clean. In some cases, to teach a lesson to some errant litterbugs who repeat the offence, we ask them to clean the place. We give time to clean the place but if they do not clean within the stipulated time, then we are forced to penalise them. The idea is to humiliate them so that the next time they may not repeat the same mistake.”

To tighten the screws on litterbugs, BMC and the Mumbai Police have also installed CCTV cameras so that people are cautious and do not litter everywhere.
