BMC to appoint ‘Swachhata Mitra’??

In a bid to solve the major problem of segregation of waste, BMC has decided to appoint Swachhata Mitra or ‘Friends of Cleanliness’. BMC has adopted this new policy to give a new impetus to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream project, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

According to reports, soon BMC would be appointing Swachhata Mitra in each Ward of Mumbai, who would interact with housing societies and commercial units that have failed to process waste or are slow in the process. These Swachhata Mitra would explain the method of segregation of waste more effectively, so that many more housing societies start segregation of waste and Mumbai could fight the colossal battle against garbage dumping!!!

In a nutshell, ‘Swachhta Mitra’, will be like a teacher who would visit housing societies and ask their problems regarding segregation of waste and shall conduct training sessions and discussions to help the housing societies to overcome their waste disposal problems. Even social media will play a key role as success stories of many housing societies will be circulated on social media to inspire other housing societies.
What’s more, to make the job of Swachhata Mitra interesting, each Swachhata Mitra will be given Rs 50,000 for the outreach programme. They will submit a monthly report to each Ward Officer.

In Mulund, BMC T-Ward had served notices to 131 buildings out of which 96 buildings have succeeded in making compost and are using it as fertilizers for their Society’s plants and gardens. In addition, Mulund has 24,853 slums and buildings. Out of this 21, 480 slums and buildings are doing only segregation of wet and dry waste on their own. The BMC has also shut the Haiwas machine.

Awareness in housing societies
Swachhata Mitra will create awareness about the segregation of waste in every housing society. They will also create awareness through sticker publicity. Stickers advocating segregation of wet and dry waste will be put in the lifts of every housing society.

Swachh Mulund, Sunder Mulund
In order to make Mulund swachh and sunder, the Swachhata Mitra will play a vital role in creating awareness among Mulundkars. They would move around Mulund, monitoring cleanliness. They will even inspect public toilets and ensure that they are clean and tidy.

Mulundkars welcome Swachhtaa Mitra

Mulund resident Suraj Mitbavkar, while appreciating Swachhata Mitra, told Home Times, “The idea of a Swachhata Mitra is good but his duty should be limited to creating awareness about cleanliness and solving public woes. He should not be authorised to slap fines on people or accept a bribe!”

“If Swachhata Mitra do their duty excellently, then Mulund can produce compost in huge quantities and the issue of the dumping ground would be solved automatically,” he quipped.
