Caution!! Scorching Heat Wave To Continue For More Days!

On Monday, March 25, 2019, Mumbai recorded one of the highest-ever maximum temperatures of 40 degrees celsius that created a record. However, the Meteorological Department (IMD) did not express surprise at the rise in temperature as it had said that generally after the Holi festival, summer sets into Maharashtra. Further, due to overlapping of seasons, the climate does witnesses soaring heat. Interestingly, on the one hand, the city is already gripped by the Lok Sabha election fever and, on top of it, the increase in daily temperature has made life difficult for Mumbaikars who are suffering from dehydration and heatstroke.

This is just the beginning of summer and more heat is in store!! The IMD confirmed that the climate has changed abruptly in the past few days with the temperature rising to a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius. According to IMD forecast, temperatures could soar for some more days on account of an anti-cyclone weather system that will heat up Maharashtra. IMD informed that since 2015 and 2017 Mumbai has experienced a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. However, this year, it touched 40 degrees Celsius.

With Mumbai set to witness another blazing summer season, Home Times spoke to Dr. Milind Shejwal to take his advice on how to remain safe during summer. Dr. Shejwal said, “It is surprising that this year the temperature has touched 40 degrees Celsius in March itself. With the temperature expected to increase further in April and May, it is advisable that Mumbaikars must take better care in advance.” He added, “During summer, people generally fall sick due to skin infections or dehydration. In fact, during the past couple of years, the heat stroke which was limited to the northern part of India, has started affecting Mumbaikars. The symptoms of heat stroke are sudden collapse due to dizziness or getting cramps in the body.”

Shedding light on the ways to protect our health during summer, Dr.Shejwal said, “The easiest technique to escape the scorching heat wave is to stay hydrated i.e. consume maximum amount of water with in-take of sugar and salt solution, or it is advisable to eat high water-content fruits like water melons or musk melons that are 90% rich in water. In addition, oranges, peaches, pineapples, plums and raspberries contain over 80% water.” “Another important advice is that people should avoid moving out between 12 noon and 4 p.m. from their house or office,” he asserted.

And, last but not the least, generally during summer, it is observed that most Mumbaikars consume roadside coolants to escape the heat. One can witness Mumbaikars cooling themselves with cold drinks like lemon juice, ice-gola and buttermilk. However, Dr. Milind Shejwal recommends that people should avoid roadside sherbet and ice-gola, as they are injurious to health because the ice used is contaminated with e-coli germs and causes dreadful diseases like typhoid and jaundice.

Hence, Dr. Milind Shejwal through, Home Times, has appealed to Mulundkars to consume only home-made cold drink juices and remain aloof from roadside cold drinks.
