CM’s Assurance To PMC Bank Depositors

Agitated depositors of Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank on Sunday heaved a sigh of relief as Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray entertained a delegation of PMC Bank depositors at his residence, ‘Matoshree’. Thackeray patiently heard the delegation’s grievances and assured to resolve the issue at the earliest.

Earlier in the day, around 500 PMC Bank depositors gathered outside the RBI office at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The ladies raised a protest by banging utensils and spoons to highlight the empty rations and the hardships the depositors’ families of the troubled bank are undergoing. Few ladies from the gurdwaras of Mulund and Bhandup had even carried stoves and cooked food on the road!!

Later, the protestors moved towards Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s residence, ‘Matoshree’. However, the scene at ‘Matoshree’ was disappointing as the police detained as many as 150 protestors, including ladies. However, they were later released. The good news was that after the police drama, Uddhav Thackeray, showed empathy and met a few members of the protestors and assured them to solve the bank scam soon.

Mulund resident Gurjyot Singh Keer, a delegation member of PMC Bank depositors, after meeting Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray told Home Times, “The Chief Minister has pledged to support us. He has even asked his team to make a report and also include the demands of the PMC depositors. Besides, Uddhav Thackerayji has even promised us that soon he will take a second meeting with us.

However, until then, he has urged us to stop the protest.” “We have assured CM that we will not conduct any protest until he meets us again.

However, if the CM ignores us and declines to meet us then we will continue our protest,” threatened Gurjyot Singh Keer.

It may be noted, till date, 19 PMC Bank depositors have died, of which 9 deaths are from Mulund. The protestors also paid homage to the departed souls.

Meanwhile, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police has arrested the present and past senior Directors of the Board of PMC Bank in connection with the Rs 4,355 crore alleged bank scam. Besides, half a dozen top officials of Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL) too have been arrested as prime culprits for taking a bulk loan and not repaying the same to the bank.
