Differently-abled Students Make Diwali Diyas and Torans!

Diwali without colourful diyas and torans is hard to imagine! Hence, there is a huge demand for earthen diyas and torans across India during Diwali. Though making and giving imaginative dazzling colours to the diyas is an art, readers would be surprised to know that differently-abled students in Mulund are making these earthen diyas and torans and their hand-made diyas and torans are getting a huge response in the market, too!!!

It may be noted that The Bhartiya Tatvagyaan Vishvast Mahila Mandal has organised a vocational training course for the differently-abled students in Mulund. This training Center has differently-abled people between the age group of 16 to 60 who learn the craft of diya and toran making at the Center and later start their own business!

This Mandal had started the training Center in the year 2000 and since then it is doing a brilliant job of training differently-abled people and making them earn their own livelihood.

A member of the Center told Home Times, “With the approach of Diwali festival, the Center begins making attractive and colourful earthen diyas which are later sold in the market. This year, our students made 5000 diyas. Besides diyas, the students also made Diwali torans which are a major attraction at the entrance of every house during Diwali. We start making Diwali diyas and torans from July.”

A step towards independence
Though the differently-abled students may be physically challenged, they have taken up the challenge to face life and this has made them independent. Today, their handmade diyas and torans are in much demand in markets, schools, Sarvajanik Mandals, etc. The earnings made from the sale of these products are distributed among the students which make them feel proud. On the one hand, while the world considers differently-abled students unintelligent and dull, but the center is making such differently-abled students intelligent and self-independent.
