EEH’s AIROLI JUNCTION PLUNGES INTO DARKNESS!

Women commuters living in fear

The Eastern Express Highway (EEH) is considered to be an important landmark of Mumbai. This highway is notorious for its traffic jams as also for the enormous vehicular traffic all through the day. Tragically, it is the Airoli Junction on the same highway that gets plunged into darkness owing to non-functional street lights here. This has led to a fear psychosis amongst the womenfolk. Airoli Junction is as prominent as Bhandup, Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli and I.I.T.,Powai areas. This junction is also frequented by commuters who travel to Thane and Mulund(E). On the other side, is the famous IT hub at Airoli and its surroundings where a considerable population of women is employed. This makes Airoli Junction all the more important for vehicular traffic that comes from Airoli to Thane and Mulund. However, the area plunging into darkness and the area becoming deserted at night is causing tremendous problems for women commuters. Not even autos or taxis can be seen in this total black-out.

A few years back, a young lady was raped in the bushes lining the highway. Taking advantage of the darkness, the young college student was brutally raped and set afire. Despite such a grim tragedy, the administration did not wake up, resulting into the street lights remaining non-functional even now. The women commuters are wondering when the area will be lit up again or are the powers-that-be waiting for another tragedy to take place??
