Election Special – School students assist senior citizens at polling booths

Once again, the senior citizens out-beat the youngsters and displayed amazing vigour and enthusiasm for their Right to Vote! On Monday, 21, 2019 as the city voted for the all-important Maharashtra Assembly Civic Polls, the polling booths saw the usual picture of senior citizens and the specially-abled being the first to turn up at the polling booths.

While it was a delight to watch these elderly and specially-abled voters march towards their respective polling booths, the sight of school students helping these eager voters cast their votes was like the cherry on the cake.

It may be noted that, during the last Lok Sabha 2014 General Election, the Election Commission had received severe criticism for failing to provide adequate facilities for the elderly and differently-abled. Hence, in a bid to assist these people, the Election Commission of India had trained students of Classes VIII and IX and given them election duty. At every election booth, young students were seen standing at the gates and welcoming the voters with a pretty smile. These students provided help to the elderly and differently-abled by arranging wheelchairs, chairs, palanquins, etc.
