Footpath Or Dumping Spot?

Already, the footpaths of Mulund are in a mess. Most are encroached upon by hawkers and vendors. Many are haphazard and uneven. Paver blocks of some are in tatters. In short, the footpaths in Mulund are anything but pedestrian-friendly! To add insult to injury, the footpath at the junction of Veena Nagar and LBS Marg has turned into a dumping spot! Residents of the region complained to Home Times that beneath the footpath a nullah is left uncovered due to the negligence of BMC. As a result, people are throwing garbage, filth and some anti-social elements are throwing liquor bottles in the nullah!!!

A local resident of the area told Home Times, “The nullah beneath the footpath has been lying open since the past many months. Since there is no protective cover, people are seen dumping waste while some goons who consume liquor at night near the spot dump liquor bottles in the nullah. As a result, the nullah emanates a foul smell and also making it troublesome to walk on this footpath.” He added, “The BMC must cover the nullah either with a tin sheet or a metallic mesh to prevent people from dumping waste into the nullah.”

Another resident of the area said, “Besides the open nullah, the condition of other footpaths in the area is also in shambles. However, despite such horrifying condition of the footpaths in the region, BMC has turned a Nelson’s Eye to the area’s woes.”

Pointing at a nearby footpath, he said, “This footpath has been bumpy and rugged for many months now. Senior citizens and pregnant women fear to walk on this footpath as many people have stumbled and broken their bones.” He added, “The footpath is really dangerous because a portion of the footpath has caved in, thus inviting an accident any moment. Instead of renovating the footpath and saving the lives of people, BMC just did a haphazard patch-up job. Hence, the residents are not satisfied. They are in fear and under constant threat of an accident. Through Home Times we urge BMC to look into our woes and solve our problems at the earliest.”
