GERD (Acid reflux)
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, generally known as acid reflux, is a very common, chronic condition affecting everyone today. It occurs when the stomach’s acid flows back up into the oesophagus, which is the food pipe connecting the throat to the stomach.
Common symptoms:
Burning sensation in the chest and/or abdomen
Chest or abdominal pain
Nausea and vomiting
Hoarseness in voice
Persistent dry cough
Difficulty in swallowing
Interrupted sleep
Complications
Acid reflux is not a serious life-threatening condition but, if left untreated, it can lead to many complications, like:
Esophagitis which is inflammation of the lining of the oesophagus due to continuous acid reflux from the stomach.
Oesophagal ulcers
Oesophagal stricture which is scarring of the oesophagus lining.
Increased risk of oesophagus cancer
Dental issues
Asthma flare-ups
