Home Times speaks to MULUND ‘Toppers’

Mulund: The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) declared SSC (Secondary School Certificate) result on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Unlike the previous years, this year the SSC result came as a big blow to many students as the passing percentage dropped from 89.41% to a staggering low of 77.10%.

In Mulund, the passing percentage was 83.30%. A total of 7,813 students had appeared for the SSC examination. The boys who appeared for examinations were 4,117 while the number of girl students was 3,699. Once again, girls outshined the boys. The number of boys passed was 3,280 while 3,231 girls passed the examination. The passing percentage of girls was 87.35% while the boys’ passing percentage was 79.67 %.

Sahil Dharod 97.40%, Lokmanya Tilak English High School
Sahil Nilesh Dharod, the SSC topper in Mulund, is a student of Lokmanya Tilak English High School. He told Home Times, “I took my studies seriously. Hence, I would study for 3-4 hours daily. Prior to the Board Examination, I increased my study time and devoted 6 to 7 hours. I am happy my hard work and devotion have yielded good dividends.”

Sahil, who scored 99 marks in Sanskrit said, “During the examination, I had no pressure because I balanced study and sports perfectly. Sports eliminated my stress. Secondly, I never took studies as a burden, I enjoyed it and studied with full dedication.”

Sahil plans to become an Engineer in the future. Besides studies, Sahil enjoys cricket and swimming.
Jai Manek (96.40%), Sharon English High School

Jai Manek with 96.40%, topped in Sharon English High School. Informing about his study pattern, he told Home Times, “I did regular studies and devoted daily 3 to 4 hours to studies.” He added, “Besides studies, I also played mobile games and would also play outdoor games to be physically fit.’

Besides, studies Jai is a karate champion. Since the age of 12, he has been learning karate and holds a 3rd-degree black belt. He has won more than 100 medals in national and international karate tournaments. In addition, Jai also plays football. Though Jai has been a good sportsman, yet he wishes to pursue Science and make a career in the same subject. He says, “True, I am good at sports but I think education is the cornerstone in our life.” Jai thanked his parents and teachers for helping him score such a high percentage.

Two inspirational tales of sheer dedication

Raj Jaiswar with 93.20% topped among all the BMC schools in Mumbai
Generally, BMC schools are condemned for their poor education, but Raj Jaiswar, a student of Mulund’s Guru Govind Hindi Medium BMC School, has proved the notion wrong. By scoring a huge 93.20%, Raj has proved that if a student has the dedication and a penchant towards studies, then even BMC schools can produce toppers. Raj has topped in all the BMC schools in the Mumbai. He stands first among 7,208 students in Mumbai BMC schools.

Son of a middle-class tailor, Raj is an inspiration for all the underprivileged children who curse poverty to be a hurdle in studies. A resident of Azad Nagar Chawl, Raj lives in a small house. His father earns a measly income of Rs. 12,000/- but young Raj made no qualms. Without tuitions or coaching classes, Raj did his studies on his own ability and passed with flying colours, bring glory to his poor parents.

Raj told Home Times, “I am aware of my father’s financial condition, hence I never troubled him for either coaching classes or any additional books for studies. I studied with focus and whatever I did not understand I got my doubts cleared by my school teachers. I am obliged to my teachers who were very co-operative and helpful.”

Raj aspires to become a C.A. (Chartered Accountant) and bring out his family from their present state to glory.
Yashika Thakkar, daughter of a laundryman scores 90.40%

Another underprivileged student who has made Mulund proud is Yashika Thakkar, daughter of a middle-class man who does ironing job in a laundry. Due to financial constraints, Yashika Thakkar’s father could not admit his daughter in an English medium school. But, kudos to Yashika Thakkar who studied from Gujarati Medium Navbharat Nutan Vidyalaya in Mulund and made her father proud by scoring an excellent 90.40%

Speaking to Home Times, Yashika Thakkar said, “I had no problem studying in a Gujarati medium school. In fact, I have scored good marks in English, too.” Informing about her study pattern she said, ‘I studied daily for 6 hours. I believe my consistent studies helped me score a good percentage.”

Yashika Thakkar aspires to become a Doctor and pursue Medicine. Besides studies, Yashika enjoys cooking and driving.

Anjali Jethva, tops in Gujarati Medium Schools in Mulund
Anjali Jethva, a brilliant Gujarati Medium student of Mulund’s Navbharat Nutan Vidyalaya has topped in all the Gujarati Medium Schools in Mulund by scoring a whopping 92.80%.

In today’s times when there is a race to educate their children in English medium schools, Anjali’s parent preferred to educate their daughter in their mother tongue medium. A proud Anjali told Home Times, “Language is no barrier to success. If a student has confidence and the devotion to study then he/ she can succeed in any language.” Informing about her family tradition, Anjali said, “My entire family has been educated in Gujarati medium schools. Both my mother and father have studied from Gujarati medium and they are proud of the fact.”
Anjali aspires to become a C.A. (Chartered Accountant). Besides studies, she enjoys driving.

Gaurav Bomble (95.20%), Holy Angel’s High School & Junior College
A resident of Gavanpada in Mulund East, Gaurav Bomble has topped in Holy Angel’s High School and Junior College. A meritorious student since the primary section, Gaurav told Home Times, “I love studies. Hence, I did regularly 6 hours studies without any pressure from my parents. I believe if a student studies without stress and focuses on the fundamentals then he/ she is bound to succeed.”

Besides studies, Gaurav loves to play cricket. He plans to pursue Science and become a Computer Engineer. His mother, Sangeeta, is a housewife while his father, Tanaji, works in a private company.
