How long will innocent Mumbaikars be killed by ‘killer’ potholes?

Home Times had published a series of articles on the ‘killer’ potholes on the Airoli road on the Eastern Express High (EEH). Interestingly, even the civic body was shaken and had filled many potholes. However, the plight of Mumbai roads is such that every day new potholes spring up due to poor quality of roads. As a result, innocent citizens are being injured and even losing their lives!

In yet another accident a Mulund lady, Sheila Kadam (63), riding pillion on a two-wheeler lost her life after she fell off the bike. Her son who was riding the bike lost his balance to avoid a deadly pothole on the Link Road joining Airoli road and the Eastern Express Highway. The lady sustained serious head injuries. She was rushed to Criticare Superspeciality Hospital in Thane but the injuries were so critical that she lost her battle for survival. Fortunately, her son sustained minor injuries.

Soon after this tragic death, the BMC awoke from its slumber and the M.P. Toll administration rapidly filled the pothole. Disappointed and annoyed at the civic body’s laxity, Shila Kadam’s son blasted, “Why the civic body spring into action only after the death of a person? Why the civic body doesn’t do its work efficiently and make all Mumbai roads pothole-free? Had the administration done its duty sincerely, my mother would have been alive.”

The number of cases due to pothole fatalities are on the rise. Recently, in just two weeks, three people have lost their lives in Mulund and Thane (refer box).  The big question is: How long innocent Mumbaikars will be killed by these ‘killer’ potholes? Mumbaikars need to teach a lesson to the governing body by casting their votes on October 21, 2019, judiciously and elect a government that is citizen-friendly and capable of solving people’s woes
