It’s business time, but… Mulund’s Business Community In Doldrums

The economic slowdown, coupled with heavy rains in the evenings, is wreaking havoc on shop-keepers and traders in Mulund. This has dampened the spirits of the business community as well as other Mulundkars. The unusual rains during Diwali have compelled many Mulundkars to remain away from roadside stalls and shops. Moreover, the wares displayed have been completely soaked in the rains, resulting in a huge loss to the sellers, especially roadside hawkers.

Post the Assembly Election, the electorate is now gearing up to celebrate Diwali. But, tragically, the continuing monsoon is playing spoilsport, forcing the revellers to stay indoors when they should be out shopping on the roads. Evidently, one could witness fewer crowds in the markets. What’s worse, the monsoon has resulted in fewer shops selling fireworks. In Mulund, there is a pre-Diwali sale of clothes, rangolis, divas, puja items, flowers, lights, lanterns, etc., which attracts hordes of buyers. But, unfortunately, the festive mood of the business community is dampened this year thanks to the unending monsoon which has damaged the items sold on roadside corners and pavements. Damaged Diwali articles have caused huge losses to the shop/stall owners. Mulundkars have not been able to procure cheap stuff usually found on the roadside, thus impacting the middle-class families.

At Diwali time, food stalls and eateries usually do brisk business, but if the rains come down unabated, then one wonders what would be the fate of these businesses. No one would buy these eatables post-Diwali feels a dejected female food vendor. A pity, indeed!!
