At Mulund’s Vitrum Glass Chawl there are toilets without doors!
On the one hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi boasts of constructing over 20 lakh toilets across India in 4 years under the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. However, the bitter truth is that at Mulund Colony’s Vitrum Glass Chawl, the condition of the toilets is extremely pathetic! The reason? The toilet doors are broken!! Under such an embarrassing scenario, the ladies of the area have united and, when one lady uses the toilet, others hold a curtain and stand outside the toilet!
Anita Sable, a local resident, lamented, “The condition of the toilets is so pathetic that there are no doors and no light. Hence, if a lady has to go to the toilet she has to be dependent on other ladies. We have made several complaints about this grave issue, but in vain.”
The Vitrum Glass Chawl is located on Guru Govind Singh Marg at Mulund Colony. For the past 14 years, the residents of this chawl are battling this serious issue. People are angry with the government. In 2004-05, the administration constructed 2 toilets and, later, with MLA funds three more toilets were constructed, but the problem is that in 14 years just 5 toilets have been made in this region which has a population of over 400 people. Thus, over 80 people use a single toilet!!
Hemlata Sable, another lady from the area, told Home Times, “As the toilets do not have doors, hence we are forced to use toilets only at night. However, due to the absence of light, we have to be dependent on other ladies who provide us cover and light.”
Taking at a jibe at the netas, she said, “During elections, the netas make tall promises, but after winning the election they forget all promises and never come to see our plight.” The residents also told Home Times that due to the pathetic condition of toilets, the residents avoid inviting even close relatives on festivals!
