Lessons on Saving Water, But Wastage of Water Due to BMC Negligence!!

Residents of Indira Nagar No. 3 are an anguished lot! With the scorching heat wave already impacting the poor residents, enormous loss of water due to a leaking water pipeline has compounded their woes. Local residents claim despite the massive wastage of precious water the BMC is paying no heed and repairing the leakage.

It is, indeed, ironical as on the one hand the BMC is giving lessons on saving water to Mumbaikars or threatening them with water cuts in the coming April/ May months, while on the other hand, due to the negligence of BMC employees, litres of valuable water are being wasted in Mulund!!! What is most disgusting is that, despite the criminal water loss, BMC T-Ward is silent and giving a blind eye to the citizens’ grievances!!

Lamenting his woes, Babu Chaudhari a local resident, told Home Times, “The water pipe was ruptured due to the negligent work of the BMC contractor. However, instead of mending the water pipe, the contractor has just tied the ruptured part with a piece of cloth. As a result, a large amount of water is being wasted every day.” He lambasted, “With the scorching summer heat wave people are begging for a single drop of water and the BMC T-Ward is least bothered about thousands of litres of expensive drinking water going down the drain!!”

Another angry resident, Kamli Mahadev, said, “The bursting of the water pipeline is nothing new in Indira Nagar. Frequently, we witness rupturing of the water pipeline and wastage of water because the condition of the water pipe is dilapidated. It is so decayed that, to prevent it from bursting, a slab has been put over it. In addition, we have even made several complaints, but the T-Ward officials give us a deaf ear. Even the area corporator pays no attention to our complaints.”

When Home Times took up the issue to the area corporator, Prakash Gangadhare, he said, “Whatever issues are brought to us, we solve them immediately. We would soon investigate the Indira Nagar water wastage issue and find a solution.”

The negligence of BMC officials is not new, but the problem is that since the BMC staff is not held accountable for their negligence, they do not care and keep repeating their negligence!! A few months back, Home Times had highlighted the BMC negligence when a JCB machine had ruptured a water pipe. The incident had happened when BMC T-Ward officials were carrying on the drainage work using JCB Machine and a water pipe had burst. The bursting of the water pipe had wasted a massive amount of water!! Despite such negligence, BMC never learns a lesson and that is most painful!!!
