M.T. Agarwal Hospital to be Super-Specialty Hospital!

Now, Mulundkars need not travel long distances to civil hospitals like KEM, Sion or Nair for treatment of dreaded diseases, because the BMC has announced to revamp M.T. Agarwal Hospital into a super-specialty hospital! A whopping budget of Rs. 400cr, too, has been sanctioned!!!

According to BMC, T-Ward has been given a target of three years to re-build M.T. Agarwal Hospital. The news has brought a ray of hope for Mulundkars and they are jubilant. A delighted Mulundkar said, “Since 2016, the M.T. Agarwal Hospital has been lying in shambles. Finally, the wait is over.”

It may be noted that in Mumbai North East there are just 2 civil hospitals viz Rajawadi Hospital (Ghatkopar) and M.T. Agarwal Hospital (Mulund) that bear the burden of lacs of patients from Mulund to Ghatkopar.

The condition of M.T. Agarwal Hospital had been pathetic. With just 200 beds, it had to cater to patients from Nahur, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg and even Thane. Hence, the condition of the hospital had deteriorated. Also, the infrastructure was crumbling and the hospital lacked many important types of equipment necessary for the treatment of critical patients. Hence, most Mulund patients were sent to long-distance civil hospitals. This was tiresome and proved fatal for patients with serious illnesses.  As a result, in 2016, it was decided to pull down the structure and re-develop the hospital into a super-specialty hospital. Many political parties and NGOs in the past 3 years urged the authorities to get the hospital constructed soon, but in vain. Though the BMC had passed the order of re-developing the hospital, the tender process created hurdles as many construction firms demanded more funds than were sanctioned by BMC. Eventually, BMC has increased the fund to 400 crores and now there are chances that soon the construction work of M.T. Agarwal Hospital will start soon.

According to reliable sources, BMC has appointed a private architectural company to design the layout of the hospital. The hospital will be a 10-storeyed tower and will have the capacity of 420 beds. In addition, the hospital will have all the facilities of a modern super-specialty hospital on the lines of other Mumbai’s top civil hospitals like KEM, Nair Hospital, etc.
