‘MANJA’ CLAIMS LESS BIRDS THIS YEAR

Each year, on the auspicious festival of Makar Sankranti, there is a tradition of flying kites but, alas, due to this conventional trend many mute birds are injured by getting entangled in the deadly string i.e. manja. Each year, many birds get injured and a few even die. Hence, during the past few years, animal lovers have started an awareness drive before the Makar Sankranti festival urging citizens to avoid flying kites or discard the deadly manja.
In fact, the government, too, has put a ban on using the lethal Chinese and nylon manjas which are so sharp that they are nothing less than a razor blade. As per the new law, people found using these manjas would be legally charged and penalised and even put behind bars! Fortunately, the awareness drive has started yielding results. According to reports, this year in Mulund and Bhandup just a single bird was reportedly injured by the manja. This is a great achievement as last year 4 birds were found injured.
Still, the war against this deadly manja is not fully won as in entire Mumbai 20 birds were injured and this is, indeed, a sign of concern.

MANJA CLAIMS HUMAN LIFE
Besides birds, even pedestrians and bikers had to move very cautiously on roads on Makar Sankranti to avoid sudden attack by the lethal manja. On the Western Express Highway, a youth was killed as he tried to save himself from the killer manja.
As per reports, the youth was riding his bike when suddenly the killer manja came over his face!  Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet hence his face was saved from being slashed. In a bid to escape the manja, the youth took his bike aside but, unfortunately, lost balance. He fell on the road and died!
