MEGHRAJ MAULS MUMBAI…AND MULUND!!

Mumbai, received a record-breaking unprecedented deluge in just 4 days from Saturday to Tuesday!! According to the weather-tracking agency, Skymet, on Monday, Mumbai broke 10 years’ rainfall record; it received around 550 mm average rainfall of the entire month of June in just 3 days!! The heavy rains brought the life of Mumbaikars to a standstill!

The consequences of the devastating deluge :
Local trains services disrupted
The incessant rains on Tuesday night left many parts of the financial capital water-logged and badly affected the Central Railway. Most of the low-lying railway stations like Kurla and Sion were submerged in water for long hours, thus disrupting the local train services of Central Railway. The railway tracks at Kanjurmarg were knee-deep in water. In addition, the railway tracks near Nanepada (Mulund) were also sunk in rainwater. Thus, the Central Railway was forced to halt its services between Thane and CST. The services were halted at 1 a.m. on Wednesday and remained non-functional till afternoon. The services started in the evening but were not normal.

Security wall collapses; kills watchman
The heavy downpour on Tuesday night became a nightmare for the poor. Due to incessant rains, the security wall at many places collapsed, proving fatal to the poor people living in slums close to the wall. A person in Mulund, too, died due to the safety fall collapsing over him. The tragic incident happened at Model Town in Mulund West. The safety wall of Falguni Society collapsed over the watchman, Gambhir Singh, who was later found seriously injured, buried under the debris of the broken wall. He was rushed to civil hospital but, alas, the doctors proclaimed him dead.

Besides the collapse of a wall at Falguni Society, another safety wall collapsed at Valmiki Nagar in Mulund Colony, near MNS office. However, since the area was deserted, a major calamity was averted.

7 trees fall in the past 4 days
The heavy rain proved havoc for many trees. In the past 4 days in Mulund, almost 7 trees fell at different areas of Mulund. According to reports, in just 4 days of the rainfall, a total of 215 trees or branches fell in entire Mumbai.

Waterlogging at many places in Mulund
From Saturday to Tuesday, in 4 days, Mulund witnessed heavy rainfall causing immense water-logging at many important roads in Mulund including Mulund’s key road, the LBS Marg. On LBS Marg, many places were knee-deep in water like the area opposite Nirman Lifestyle, Sonapur Junction (Bhandup), R-Mall and Kadam pada.

Many houses flooded with water
Tuesday’s deluge proved havoc to several residents staying on the ground floor. In Mulund East water entered into many houses making residents fume with anger at the negligent cleaning of the nullahs by BMC!! The areas where water entered into the houses and witnessed huge water-logging included Siddharth Nagar, Ali Bahadur Chawl, Indira Nagar and Goshala Road and Mulund (W).

Many areas plunged into darkness
To add insult to injury, many areas were plunged in darkness as MSEDCL had cut power supply as a preventive measure. Thus, residents into whose houses water had entered at night had a tough time.

RTO does laudable work
The RTO played a key role in preventing a traffic jam and avoid water-logging. The heavy downpour on Tuesday night created a flood-like situation on the busy LBS Marg. The water was so much that BMC employees who were called to clean the drains and nullahs took to their heels, terrified by the torrential water flow. However, kudos to the RTO officers who risked their lives and got engaged in cleaning the culverts at LBS Marg which soon drained the massive water-logging at Sonapur junction.
