Monsoon Multiplies Pollution and Filth In Mulund!

Mulund is proudly called the ‘Prince of Suburbs’. In addition, Mulund boasts of a BJP MP and most of its corporators are members of the BJP that aspires to root out uncleanliness through its ambitious programme, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan! Regrettably, Home Times, in its survey, found a bitter picture of Mulund. We witnessed heaps of garbage lying in the open, stinking and overflowing drains, etc. In addition, with the start of monsoon, the edges and corners of the road are filled with muck. Be it Mulund West or East, the picture of dirt and filth is all around. Home Times lensman has captured each and every polluted area of Mulund in his camera. The pictures are disturbing and depict the ugly side of cleanliness and sanitation in Mulund. As a result, Mulund residents who pay an exorbitant amount to live in Mulund are living a miserable life and are angry and disappointed!

People living in Mahakali Nagar in Mulund East complained to Home Times that with the beginning of monsoon the nullahs and gutters in their areas have started to overflow, throwing up an unbearable stink. Mrs. Shukla, a concerned resident of the area moaned. “The roads in our area are filled with filth and muck dumped out by the overflowing nullahs and gutters. Also due to stormy winds, tree branches and leaves have created heaps of garbage.” She lamented, “Due to such uncleanliness, mosquitoes have increased in our area and this is causing us great nuisance.”

Sharing her bitter experience with BMC, she said, “When I made a complaint to the BMC department about the abundant dirt in our area, the operator comforted me that my line was being transferred to the concerned department. However, after a long wait, my phone was disconnected, giving me no solution.” She added, “Before I was disappointed, soon I received a call from BMC that they would come and solve the issue. I was delighted. But, to my dismay instead of cleaning the area, the BMC officials recommended us to make compost from the heaps of garbage!!”

The residents claim that their building is dilapidated and is on verge of going into redevelopment, hence they cannot make compost. When Mrs. Shukla informed their agony to BMC they agreed to clean the area but, alas, BMC has failed to live up to its promise. “Each day, the residents wait for the BMC employees but they do not turn up,” said Mrs. Shukla with a choked voice.  Residents are in fear that the dirt would invite deadly disease like dengue and malaria.

Like Mahakali Nagar in Mulund East, people living at Mulund Porbandar Complex Road in Mulund West are also undergoing the same trauma of pollution and filth. Mandar Patil, a local resident, informed Home Times that since last week their area has become an empire of garbage and filth! Patil added, “Our area has the prestige of being the cleanest area in Mulund but, alas, since 2 weeks our area has become most polluted.” “The foul stink emanating from the filth has made life miserable for the people living in the area. Due to the monsoon, the garbage has become wet, hence mosquitoes have begun to breed on a large scale, posing danger of dengue and other diseases”, mourned Patil.

Fearing an epidemic, Mandar Patil, moaned, “Dirt has spread all around our region due to dogs and other animals hunting for food in the filth. If BMC does not clean the area soon, we fear an epidemic with children and senior citizens falling prey to diseases.” He added, “It is surprising that daily BMC Clean-Up Van visits our area but they only collect the garbage in the dustbin and turn a Nelson’s Eye to the filth scattered around the bin. As a result, we are in a tight spot.”
