MORE MISERY FOR MULUNDKARS; SEEPING DRAINAGE WATER THE CULPRIT!!

Each year, before monsoon, BMC spends crores of rupees on the cleaning of nullahs or storm-water drains. But, alas, the bitter truth is that the callous BMC workers’ cleaning is just an eye-wash. Soon, within a week or two, the nullahs are filled with garbage and muck, thus resulting in overflow of dirty drainage water onto the roads!! Home Times, this week, exposes a similar picture of one such brimming nullah in Mulund West!

The overflowing nullah that has made life hell for Mulundkars is located near E.S.I.S. Hospital, next to the ESIC officers’ quarters on the busy LBS Marg in Mulund West. Mulundkars are frustrated by the incessantly discharge of sewage water flowing on the main road. The constant flow of filthy water has made the road slippery, hence there are reports of many Mulundkars and bikers slipping and injuring themselves!

Mulundkars complain that, on one the hand, they are already annoyed with the traffic jam on LBS Marg due to the on-going Metro work and, to add insult to injury, the dirty sewage water overflowing on the LBS Marg has made their life hell! An angry Mulundkar told Home Times, “Since the past few days, LBS Marg has been marred by the foul-smelling drainage water oozing from the nullah. Besides dirty water, the nullah also releases sludge which has turned into grease, hence the road has become so slippery that anybody who walks or rides over it runs the risk of falling down! There have been many instances where both pedestrians and bikers have stumbled and injured themselves!”

Local residents living in the area lamented that the condition worsens during monsoon. Despite the people suffering, the civic authorities are silent on this vital issue. Smita Kadam, a local resident told Home Times, “The sewage water has spilled so much on the road that the people residing at the ESIC Officer’s quarters are forced to seek entry into their homes from another path. We, too, avoid this slippery road and use another path to drop our children to school.”

Harish Gupta told Home Times, “The sewage line has been overflowing since the past 3 days. What is agonizing is that nearby there is the E.S.I.S. Hospital. Therefore, it is the duty of the civic body to clean the sewage at the earliest so that the hospital is saved from pollution and foul stench.” He added, “The civic administration has made a wide footpath nearby but, due to the dirt and filth emanating from the drainage water, nobody uses the footpath and risks their lives by walking on the road.”

According to Gupta, BMC which is the richest municipal body in Asia must be quick to solve such issues but, alas, the corrupt BMC officials are only interested in filling their own pockets care a dam for the Mumbaikars!

Harendra Thakkar asked, “Who will solve this problem? People do not have a proper path to walk on. The situation is so grim that the civic body must clean the nullah at the earliest and do a good job so that sewage water does not flow again on the road!”
