New Dumping Ground in Mulund East?

The BMC may have officially announced the closure of the Dumping Ground in Mulund East near Hari Om Nagar but, tragically, the vacant land opposite the Fire Brigade station in Mulund East has been illegally converted into a dumping ground by the locals!!

Shraddha Sangale, a Mulund East resident living in the vicinity of Fire Brigade station, told Home Times, “About a year ago, a temple of Bhagwan Shiv was built on the vacant land opposite the fire brigade station. But, surprisingly, it was demolished the same night. Ever since the demolition, the debris of the demolished temple has been lying there. As a result, local people also began dumping garbage and filth over the debris.”  She complained, “Due to the foul smell emanating from the decomposed filth, the place is polluting the entire environment. It has become a nuisance for morning walkers and even the people living in the surrounding area. In addition, even little children do not dare to go near the open ground to play due to the terrible stink and pollution.”

She lamented, “Since the BMC Clean-up van does not visit our area, local people have started dumping their household waste, junk, left-over food and garbage here. Concerned citizens have even requested people not to dump filth on this ground, but the public pays no heed. What is most agonizing is that people also dump garbage in the open gutter!”

Besides household garbage, the new dumping ground has become a hot spot for the builders who are constructing buildings in the nearby areas. These builders also dump their construction debris at this ground. A woman lamented the place has also become dangerous for ladies at night as the place is a hideout of anti-socials. One can find many liquor bottles in the heaps of filth.

Irked at the heaps of garbage, angry residents claim the place has become an eye-sore as it is killing the beauty of Mulund.

Mulundkar said, “Since the place is close to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), it is easily visible to people traveling on EEH and it portrays a dirty picture of Mulund.”

He added, “What is shameful is that while everybody is fuming at the illegal dumping ground, both, the BMC and the local corporator, have turned a Nelson’s Eye to this grave issue. In addition, even the BMC T-Ward does not send its Clean-up van in this area to pick up the garbage!! “I think the BMC will awaken only after the place becomes a second dumping ground”, he wondered.
