OPEN GARBAGE BIN MAKES HELL AT KHINDIPADA!!

The nation might boast of Swachh Bharat Mission, but the harsh reality is contrary as even today many parts of Mumbai are defaced with heaps of garbage and stink emitting from open and filthy garbage bins. One such open garbage bin that has made life hell for the residents around its vicinity is located at Khindipada, a largely populated locality between Mulund and Bhandup.

Annoyed at the 40-year-old open garbage bin at Collector Chawl, a local resident told Home Times, “The residents of the area are fed up of the stink and foul smell emanating from the open garbage bin that collects garbage from the entire Khindipada area.” Informing about the garbage bin, he said, “The garbage bin is an open piece of land whose four sides are surrounded by a wall with no top cover! Such kind of open garbage bins have been phased out by the government, but it is surprising that, even after 40 years such an orthodox system of garbage disposal is prevalent in this area and is a cause of major health hazards. Each morning people from the residents dump their garbage in this ground which is spreading diseases and making life miserable.”

Residents are so irked by this open garbage bin, that they complain that due to the accumulation of such heaps of garbage at one place, the garbage spills over the road and hence residents have great difficulty to walk on the road. In addition, when the wind blows minute particles of garbage enter into their houses, causing great inconvenience.

Another resident of the locality informed, “A few months back, the garbage bin was demolished after heeding the complaints of the residents and its renovation work was above to start. But, alas, due to some reason the renovation work was stopped.” Angry residents allege that it is the duty of the local corporator to solve such problems but, tragically, the corporator is paying no heed to their problem.

Another resident informed, “Since the past three months bricks, sand and other material required for construction of the new garbage bin has been lying idle with no civic worker to take charge of the material. The construction material is also getting spoilt due to the negligence of the local corporator. Besides, the spill-over of garbage and sand on the road is causing many accidents and two-wheelers are facing great difficulties to commute.”

A.R. Khan, a senior citizen, who is the victim of extreme stench as his house is close to the garbage bin, told Home Times, “We have approached the concerned officials at S Ward. However, the officers have just assured us to take action, but not given any concrete undertaking to renovate the garbage bin.”  He added, “The garbage bin must be renovated by using modern technology so that the stink and pollution menace should be eradicated and neither the residents nor the environment must be harmed.”

Social activist Surekha Salunkhe told Home Times, “We had taken up the matter with the local corporator and urged to renovate the garbage bin in modern style. The corporator supported us and assured to assist, but more than one month has passed and still there is no response from the corporator.”

When Home Times took the woes of Khindipada residents to Dipali Gosavi, Corporator (Ward 109) she said, “The garbage bin renovation work will start by and shall be ready within a week.”
