PET OWNERS, BEWARE!! BMC on the prowl!!

Pet lovers, if you are walking your pets, particularly dogs, out in the morning to relieve themselves, then beware of the BMC Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department officials who are on a vigil to pounce upon such owners and fine you Rs. 500/- for littering in public places!

In fact, BMC has made carrying a ‘poop lifter’ mandatory or else pay Rs. 500/- fine!!!

According to reports from BMC T-Ward, in Mulund, from January till date, the SWM officials have fined owners for their pets littering on roads and public places. The owners have been fined at Bhakti Marg, P.K. Road, Chintamani Deshmukh Garden and A.C.C. road. Each month, the T-Ward SWM team collects Rs. 50,000/- as penalty in Mulund from pet owners.

An official of the T-Ward SWM civic team said that, usually in morning and evening, pet owners have the habit of taking their pets out for a stroll to relieve them of Nature’s call. However, in this process, many pets poop on the road or at a public garden and this causes a menace to the common public. In addition, it also spreads diseases and pollutes the environment. Hence, to eliminate such nuisance, BMC has started an initiative to penalise the owners so that they stop their pets from pooping in public places.

Interestingly, this drive has really worked wonders in Mulund as many pet owners are seen carrying tissue papers or carry bags to avoid being fined. As a result, in Mulund, the number of violators are less as compared to those in other Mumbai suburbs.

T-Ward, in its mission of Swachh Mulund, Sunder Mulund has decided to keep a hawk’s-eye on pet owners violating BMC’s cleanliness and sanitation drive. It may be noted BMC has made it mandatory for all pet owners to carry ‘poop lifter’ to clean their pet’s poop or face a fine of Rs. 500.

In Mumbai, the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department of the civic body has fined around 149 pet owners for their pets littering at public places while out on a stroll. A hefty fine of Rs 2.3 lacs has been collected from the offenders.
