Plant trees with a vow to ‘PROTECT’!

Ever pondered on the Science of Nature? The trees inhale carbon dioxide, the toxic gas released by us and exhale oxygen, a vital gas necessary for living organisms to survive! Thus, trees indirectly give mankind the power to live. If the trees are wiped out from our planet, the living organisms will naturally die!!! According to science, a single tree has the potential to give life to 1,000 human beings. However, isn’t it outrageous that the tree which gives us life is itself at the mercy of mankind and begging for life?

Well, it is wisely said, “The lust for power makes a person insane”. Hence, in his mad rush for development, Man has lost his senses and is wantonly killing trees. In a bid to become a superpower and be counted among the developed nations of the world, India too has joined the race of Development. The development of modern infrastructures like local trains, Metro 3 projects, Bullet Train project, Mumbai Coastal Road, etc. have started destroying the greenery of Mumbai. Several mangroves have been ruined and thousands of trees are on the verge of being axed for the various development projects. In Mulund itself, the BMC T-Ward has approved axing 550 trees for widening nullahs and other development projects. Of course, the felling of 2,646 trees in Aarey Colony, is the biggest concern of environmentalists and they are fighting tooth and nail not to let our green cover pay the price of progress.

The incessant rain in Mumbai, the climate change that crippled several states of India by devastating floods and the unhealthy air that Mumbaikars are inhaling are all the signals about the horrors of fast depletion of trees.

Remember, a single tree is capable of sustaining life to over 1,000 human beings. The trees are God’s guards against factors damaging the environment. Trees help in moderating climate, improving air quality, reducing storm-water run-off, preventing floods, etc. The canopies of trees act as a physical filter, trapping dust and absorbing pollutants from the air. Even the plants in the balconies of our house absorb several invisible poisonous micro-organisms and help us by providing clean oxygen.

Home Times appreciates the Maharashtra government’s recent policy and its various plantation drives, but the basic problem is that most of the plantation drives are mere ‘publicity spectacles’. After clicking photographs, the saplings are ignored and they die within a week!!!

Hence, Home Times urges readers that it is high time Mumbaikars understand the importance of trees and start planting trees. But remember, just planning a sapling is not enough. You should take care of the sapling as a mother takes care of her new-born baby. Until the sapling grows into a towering tree, keep nurturing it! You don’t have to plant lakhs or crores of trees. The important thing to understand is that the tree you planted must survive.

Hence, while planting a tree let’s take a vow to PROTECT it!
