Stop Littering Nullahs! T-Ward Fines 45 Litter Bugs!!

Mulundkars, beware! The BMC has tightened its belt to penalise each and every person found littering nullahs! The new Municipal Commissioner, Pravin Pardeshi, has set up patrolling teams in the city’s 24 wards and has instructed them to take strict action against anyone found throwing garbage in the nullahs. In Mulund, BMC T-Ward officials have, till now, penalised 45 people for littering nullahs and collected a fine of Rs. 4,500/- In entire Mumbai, BMC has collected Rs. 3 lacs as penalty.

BMC marshals are collecting a fine of Rs. 100 to Rs. 200 to desist people from polluting the nullahs because the garbage thrown in the nullahs obstructs the flow of water which leads to water-logging in nearby areas. A BMC official told, “When there is a flood-like situation, the citizens generally criticize BMC for not cleaning the nullahs meticulously. Hence, BMC has started a drive to keep the nullahs clean. After all, prevention is better than cure.”

BMC has also put into place a new squad called Nuisance Detection (ND) Squad, whose duty is to keep a hawk’s-eye on litter bugs dumping garbage in the nullahs. The ND squad operates in a group of six to seven members in each squad. There is one squad in each of the 24 wards in Mumbai. The ND squad also has support under the Mumbai Police Act.

According to the Mulund T-Ward Solid Waste Department, the Nuisance Detection squad has penalised 45 people from the slum areas of Mulund which include Rahul Nagar, Hanuman Pada, Amar Nagar, High Land Park, etc. and has collected a fine of Rs. 4500/-.  Besides penalty, the BMC has also put up banners creating awareness among people to desist from throwing garbage in nullahs or face penalty. In addition, at some nullahs, BMC has also erected grilles surrounding the nullahs.

In order to identify the nullahs that have been cleaned, the BMC is erecting grilles. These grilles are being installed at a certain distance along the nullahs to identify where garbage is being discharged.
