BMC hires a private agency to keep Mulund clean

In a bid to dispose off garbage economically, BMC has decided to absolve itself of this responsibility and, in its place, give its contract to private companies. Though the Standing Committee has raised objections, BMC has decided to go ahead and experiment with four Wards in Mumbai. Among these 4 Wards is Mulund T-ward.

Garbage to be disposed off economically
According to information from the BMC T-Ward Waste Department, till date, BMC used to hire separate contractors for labour, cleaning roads, Clean-up Vans, etc. This was an expensive process as it cost Rs. 1900 just for the machine to pick up one-ton garbage. While the new idea of hiring a single contractor for all the clean-up work sums up to Rs 2300 per one metric ton of garbage. Hence it is a fruitful deal.
Right now, BMC has distributed dust-bins to housing societies. These dust-bins will be collected by BMC employees and handed over to private contractors’ who will carry them into their private vans and dump in dumping grounds.
How will the new clean-up system work?
Every day Mulund collects 190 metric ton of garbage. According to the new system, in the coming 6 months, BMC will provide dust-bins marked with RFID tagline to all the housing societies in Mulund. The vans that will collect garbage from these dust-bins will also be carrying a similar RFID tagline. This tagline will thus help in easy identification of garbage picked and dumped.
The private contractor will also be responsible for collecting garbage from the containers placed at prominent roads in Mulund. Likewise, garbage obtained from slums will also be collected by private contractors and a computer system will monitor the disposal procedure. Thus, a single click will inform whether garbage has been collected from a dustbin or not.
Segregation of garbage
The major highlight of disposal of garbage through private contractors is that the vans carrying the waste will have three different sections hence garbage will be appropriately segregated into Dry waste; Wet waste and Electronic waste.
The dry and electronic waste will be forwarded to the compilation center in the same ward. It may be noted that wet garbage is also becoming less due to many societies converting it into manure. Thus, the waste forwarded to dumping ground will gradually become lesser and lesser. This will hence reduce the load of garbage dumped on dumping ground.
Added advantage
Another advantage of the new system is that sometimes due to traffic jam, some garbage is not collected but the new system has a side loading facility. Hence garbage will be picked from all the dustbins from its place.
Home Times advice
In nutshell, the new system looks attractive as it will help BMC in cleaning the city in a big way but the citizens too need to extend their cooperation. They should at least segregate waste at home so that the segregation process becomes less tiresome.
