Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common, chronic, painful condition of the hand and arm. It is caused due to compression of the median nerve, a major nerve of hand travelling in a narrow passage, called Carpal Tunnel on the palm side of wrist. This median nerve provides strength and sensation to thumb and fingers. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome generally affects women and older people and the pain is worse during night and waking time. If left untreated, it can lead to nerve damage and serious complications of the whole arm.
Symptoms
Numbness, pain, tingling or burning sensation in thumb and next 2 fingers
Pain also radiates to wrist and whole hand
In severe cases there is loss of grip and strength in thumb and fingers
Risk factors
Repetitive wrist and hand movements
Hormonal changes during pregnancy
Health disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid imbalance
