150th Birth Anniversary Celebration of Mahatma Gandhi

The 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the ‘Father of the Nation’, was celebrated with pomp and spectacle across India on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. The entire nation paid rich tributes to Bapu and conducted multiple programs like prayer meetings, commemorative ceremonies, Swachh Bharat Mission, a war against plastic, etc. From government offices to socio-political institutions to schools and colleges, all actively participated in making the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi a memorable occasion!

In Mulund, the students of Sheth Karamshi Kanji English School (SKKE School) along with students of Sheth Motibhai Pachan Rashtriya Shala (SPMR School – both English and Gujarati medium) collectively took out a massive rally which consisted of 400 students ranging from Pre-Primary tiny tots to youth from the college division. The rally was so enormous that the school had to hire three trucks that were packed with students dressed as Gandhiji and students singing the favourite bhajans of Mahatma Gandhi. The rally was a star attraction and it caught the attention of every passer-by on the road!

Mahatma Gandhi was known for his humanitarian work for mankind. He urged his fellow citizens to donate as much as possible so that the underprivileged sections of the society never had to beg to make a living. The students of SKKE and SPMR School emphasized the importance of ‘donation’ in their rally. Through posters and placards, the students brought home the significance of donation and showed how a donation can bring joy in the lives of the deprived sections of the society.

The rally also propagated awareness about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to discard the use of single-use plastic such as plastic bags and make India pollution-free. It may be noted that SKKE School in Mulund is the first school to wage a war against single-use plastic. The school has even won an award for being a ‘Crusader Against Plastic’!

Speaking to Home Times, Dilip Rawani, President of SKKE School, said, “Since the past 9 years, our school has been celebrating Gandhi Jayanti with intense enthusiasm and utter devotion. Each year, our students organize several activates to bring alive the virtues and actions of Mahatma Gandhi’s life. However, this year for the first time our students took out such a grand rally that it became a centre of attraction in entire Mulund.”

Besides a huge crowd of students, the rally was joined by Manoj Kotak, Member of Parliament from North-East Mumbai. Other prominent personalities who participated in the rally were members of the school’s Managing Committee, Varsha Deshpande (Principal), school teachers and other staff members.
