Meet Narayan Nikam – A Clean-Up Marshal Like No Other!!

Till now, Mumbaikars have witnessed BMC Clean-Up Marshals as corrupt, violent and cruel. But, meet Narayan Nikam, a BMC Clean-Up Marshal posted at Eastern Express Highway in Mulund East, who is winning the hearts of Mulundkars with his humanitarian approach towards his work!!

Nikam’s working style has become so much popular in Mumbai that Mulund resident, Viral Gala was so overwhelmed and dumbfounded by Nikam’s humanity that he made a video of his working style. The video has gone viral and has made Nikam more famous. According to Gala, more than 6, 62,000 people have viewed the video and have been impressed by Nikam’s virtuous conduct. More than 10,526 people have posted the video on their Facebook!!!

Soft-spoken, noble and down-to-earth, Narayan Nikam, unlike the other BMC Clean-Up Marshals, treats his offenders with grace and dignity. If he spots a litterer or a person spitting on the road then, instead of throwing abuses and penalizing him, Nikam politely asks him, “Do you wish to pay a fine or would prefer to clean up the place?” When the person declines to pay fine, then Narayan hands him his handkerchief or a duster from the BMC Van and assists him with water to clean the stained area.

Speaking to Home Times, Narayan Nikam said, “I firmly believe that polite and gracious behaviour eliminates the pride in the offender. Secondly, the offender feels ashamed of his actions and, in future, would think a hundred times before littering or spitting in public places.”

On an average, Nikam takes action against 25 offenders. Out of these, 10 to 15 people clean the stain themselves, bowled over by the earthy behaviour of Nikam. Since the past 4 months Nikam has been associated with TMC (Thane Municipal Corporation). He has been working as a Clean-Up Marshal since 2010. Nikam asserts, “Since 2010, my style of working has been humanitarian.”

Viral Gala, who made Nikam’s video, told Home Times, “I have been following Nikam for one month and am overwhelmed by Nikam’s sincerity and humanity. Hence, I decided to shoot his video so that other arrogant BMC Marshals take a lesson and become humane.”

On being quizzed if he expected the video would be such a huge success, Viral quipped, “Never! I had never imagined in my wildest dreams the video would be so much appreciated. I think India truly needs sincere people like Nikam in our system. I think he deserves to be promoted to an even higher post so that he does not end his life cleaning dirt!”

Gala informed, “The highlight of Nikam is that he treats everybody equally, be it a businessman or a politician or a common rickshaw driver. He does not take a bribe. Either he takes a fine of Rs. 200 or cajoles them to clean the place.” He added, “Nikam’s honesty towards his job is so passionate that many people, bowled over his honesty, click ‘selfies’ with him!”
