Now, enjoy the charm of waterfalls near Mumbai dams!

The lakes of Mumbai providing drinking water to Mumbaikars will soon be beautified by BMC to attract tourists to generate revenue. It may be noted that each lake supplying water to the city has a dam. Interestingly, BMC owns guest houses at Tansa, Modak Sagar and Vihar dams. These guest houses will be opened to the public. BMC plans to encash the captivating view of the waterfalls at the dams and the fascinating view of the lakes.

The decision has been taken by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief, Praveen Pardeshi. Though the work of beautification has started, nobody has pondered over safety issues and the waste generated.

Briefing the media about the proposal, a BMC official said, “The idea behind the move is to increase BMC revenue and provide leisure and amusement to tourists. To enable the tourists to relax and have a gala time, BMC- owned guest houses near Tansa, Modak Sagar and Vihar lakes will be rented. Until now these guest houses near the lakes have been solely used by state officials or guests of the government, but now shall be rented to tourists to generate revenue.”

Informing about the booking facilities at the guest houses, the official said, “The guest houses can be booked online. The rates of these guest houses will be less as compared to rates of other hotels near these lakes.” He added, “The guest house inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park near Vihar will be opened after it is renovated.”

The opening of the guest house at Sanjay Gandhi National Park will be a boon for Mulundkars and they can enjoy picnicking and have a great time.

The hurdles
The major hurdle in opening guest houses to the public for picnics near the water bodies supplying water to Mumbai is safety. Besides, the waste generated will be an additional problem and it will increase the pollution in Mumbai.

Mulundkars applaud BMC decision
Raju Maske, a Mulundkar delighted at the BMC decision, told Home Times, “It is a great idea as it will not only generate revenue for BMC, but it will be a great enjoyment for Mumbaikars and foreign tourists visiting Mumbai.” He added, “The dams located near the lakes have a thrilling charm and the vision of waterfalls is enchanting. People will enjoy and BMC would generate a lot of money.”
