Neelam Nagar residents demand speed-breakers

Instance of rash driving, particularly by two-wheeler riders, have become a common menace in Mumbai. In Mulund East, residents have expressed concern over the numerous accidents and, hence, have demanded the construction of speed-breakers to deter speeding by rash drivers and bikers.

Residents of the area near Holy Angel’s High School and Junior College told Home Times that as the area has a school in the vicinity, hence rash driving is very dangerous. A local resident, Vedant Salgaonkar, told Home Times, “Since the past 2 years there is no speed-breaker in the area. Hence, at noon and in the evening when the school students leave the school, the place becomes accident-prone due to the heavy flow of traffic and over-speeding of vehicles. Therefore, crossing the road is a challenge.”

He added, “The place becomes not only dangerous to the lives of little children, but even the lives of senior citizens walking on the road are at stake. Many instances of chain-snatching have also been reported in the area as the chain-snatchers, due to the absence of speed- breakers, can easily escape in the crowd.”

Local residents of the area informed Home Times that many years back the road had three speed-breakers due to which both, the school students and pedestrians had no issues. However, after a few years with the road repair work, the speed-breakers disappeared, and this started the trouble. Hence, the people are demanding speed-breakers.

Hitesh Thakker, another resident, spoke about the speed-breakers. He said, “It is true that there were speed-breakers on this road in the past, but they were just for namesake. Soon after they were constructed, they became dilapidated and were destroyed. After the absence of speed-breakers, life has become hazardous. In addition, there are constant brawls between bikers and auto drivers. The residents are, therefore, seeking a solution by urging the civic authorities to construct speed-breakers at the earliest.” He informed, “Meanwhile, as a temporary solution, the police have intensified its patrolling in the area. Whenever a quarrel erupts between the two-wheeler riders and pedestrians, the police resolve the issue. “Nevertheless, the road desperately needs two good speed-breakers at the earliest,” asserted Hitesh Thakker.
