RTO Goes Tough On Heavy Vehicles Entering Mulund!

Penalizes 169 vehicles in a non-stop 13-day operation and earns Rs 1.06 lacs as fines!

In a bid to control traffic jam in Mulund, the RTO is leaving no stone unturned. It may be noted that Mulund RTO has stood first in controlling illegal parking in entire Mumbai. Besides unleashing terror on errant illegal parking, the RTO this week taught a tough bitter lesson to the heavy vehicles entering into Mulund during peak hours. In the recent 13-day non-stop crackdown, the RTO penalized 169 heavy vehicle drivers and collected a whopping Rs 1,06,800 as penalty.

Speaking to Home Times, Sharad Ovhal, Sr.PI Traffic Police Department, said, “We are glad to inform you that due to our continuous crackdown for non-stop 13 days we have been successful in discouraging the entry of heavy vehicles to a large extent in Mulund during peak hours. In addition, there is fear among drivers due to penalizing of more than 500 errant vehicle drivers daily. As a result of our strict action now fewer vehicles can be seen parked on LBS Marg. This has reduced the traffic jam issue commendably, hence the commuters are delighted.”

It may be noted, to solve the traffic issue, the RTO had, from February 1, last year, banned entry of heavy vehicles into Mumbai between peak hours i.e. 8 to 11 a.m. in the morning and between 5 to 9 p.m. in the evening. Though the RTO had announced the ban, yet many errant drivers were illegally breaking the traffic norms and causing a huge traffic mess.

However, after the start of the Metro work, the RTO became strict and started taking stringent action against traffic norm violators. Sharad Ovhal, Sr.PI Traffic Police said, “The Metro work has escalated the traffic issue. Due to barricades put up by MMRDA on the roads for the Metro work, the roads have become narrower leading to traffic congestion. Amidst such a traffic mess, if heavy vehicles enter the city, the traffic becomes a nightmare. Hence, we show no empathy to traffic norm violators and act tough against them. Our priority is to maintain a smooth flow of traffic and avoid the traffic jam.”
