Road between Tata Colony and Kelkar College hits a roadblock! Funds exhausted!

The work on the road connecting Shamshan Bhoomi to Vaze Kelkar College in Mulund East is a laudable effort of Mulund East residents who have fought tooth and nail to get the road constructed. Mulund East residents have been battling every stumbling block for getting the road constructed for the past many years. They even bravely confronted the controversy related to the land and did not let the road work stop. Eventually, Mulund East residents handed the responsibility of completing the road work to BMC T-Ward. But, once again, the work has witnessed a roadblock as the funds for construction have exhausted!

Irritated at the stopping of the road work an angry Mulundkar, Dipesh Malbari, told Home Times, “The traffic jam at Navghar junction is so menacing that it takes me almost half an hour to reach my house which is just a little distance from the signal. The new road is need of the hour as the road would play a lion’s share in de-congesting the heavy traffic issue near Eastern Express Highway circle leading into Navghar Road in Mulund East. The construction of the link road from Tata Colony to Vaze Kelkar College will divert a huge number of motorists residing at Kelkar College side and VPM College side.”

It may be noted that BMC willingly took the responsibility of completing the road. It even started the work in February 2019 and assured to complete it before the monsoon. However, BMC claims the funds required to complete the work got escalated and BMC was forced to stop the work and seek financial aid from the BMC’s central agency. Kishore Gandhi, the Assistant Commissioner of BMC T-Ward told Home Times, “The work of the road has been taken over by the BMC’s central agency. This central agency has invited tenders and after selecting the contractor the work of the road would resume by mid-December, 2019.” On quizzing when the road will be ready, Gandhi said, “We are hopeful the work should be completed by January 2020.”

Though BMC has assured to complete the work by January 2020, Venkatesh Iyer, another Mulundkar fumed, “The new road should be completed on a footing because the traffic at Campus Corner signal is, most of the time, inoperative which leads to a massive traffic jam. The jam is so killing that it takes 20 to 25 minutes to travel from Campus Corner signal to Hanuman Circle which is just 2 minutes distance. The new road will help to re-route the traffic and lessen the traffic jam. Hence, I urge local political leaders to take up the issue and get the new road constructed fast.”
