BHANDUP YOUTH SHOW THE WAY

Since the BMC has no time to fill and level Mumbai’s infamous potholes, it seems some youth from Bhandup have taken it upon themselves to set things right. They have started filling and levelling the potholes. All the youth have come together and launched a campaign to make Bhandup’s roads pothole-free. They undertook the arduous task of actually counting the number of potholes and even measuring their size.

The presence of innumerable potholes and the resultant accumulation of water therein has created grave problems for both the residents and motorists who live in fear of accidents. We tend to blame the authorities for this state of affairs. However, in a pleasant deviation, Bhandup’s youth have come forward to show the authorities as well as the locals what youth power can achieve. Bhandup’s Tembhi Pada area as also Sanman Singh Marg, Shivaji Talav and other places are plagued by potholes at the onset of the monsoons. The locals allege that the BMC Ward office always ignores this phenomenon. Fed up with this indifference, the youth of Bhandup used various means to follow up with BMC. To this end, a few youth began measuring the size of these potholes and presented their findings to the Asst. Commr. of BMC S-Ward.

Further, the youngsters roamed throughout Bhandup to count the number of potholes and suggested various ways to level them. Their efforts proved fruitful and BMC S-Ward awoke from its slumber and started repairing the potholes before the end of monsoon. This motivated the civic authorities who independently surveyed the pot-holes throughout this suburb. What is commendable is that these socially responsible youth spared their precious time without launching any agitation or goaded by anyone’s leadership or being dependent on any social organisation. They took it upon themselves to come forward to find out the state of affairs first-hand and follow up with BMC, compelling S-Ward to spring into action. Citizens of all other wards, too, should draw a leaf out of this achievement and prevail upon the civic authorities to act positively.

Kiran Gaychor, a Bhandup resident, told Home Times ” We launched this campaign keeping aside any party and performed this task as ordinary Bhandupkars. We are fulfilling our responsibilities as concerned citizens. We adopted a posture of peace before BMC which has borne fruit.”

Mulund youth should follow the example set by their Bhandup counterparts, but it is a matter of conjecture if BMC T-Ward responds as positively as BMC S-Ward.
